Common names include alumroot and coral bells.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><i>Heuchera</i> have palmately lobed leaves on long petioles, and a thick, woody rootstock. The genus was named after Johann Heinrich von Heucher (1677–1746), an 18th-century German physician, and Professor at Wittenberg University. There are approximately 37 species, but the taxonomy of the genus is difficult because the species often intergrade with one another, hybridization is common, and the flowers change markedly in proportion as they develop.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The majority of <i>Heuchera</i> sold for gardens are hybrids of <i>H. americana</i>, such as 'Green Spice'. The genus includes herbaceous plants and small sub-shrubs. In the past, the genus was commonly viewed in a broader sense including a number of species from the Canary Islands and Madeira which are now transferred to the genus <i>Pericallis</i>, including the Florist's Cineraria (<i>Pericallis x hybrida</i>). The uses for <i>Cineraria</i> include topical application for the treatment of cataracts.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This post is part of the <a href="http://floralfridayfoto.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Floral Friday Fotos meme</a>.</span><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCbCjcnnPNJRhzH0pwYZ9cLTmzGzGlH5i7Gdkf0UGBNNm5K-mS-JWqN7ZgnLA2hUUxRvIlsDhvZrEDuOkTp-ZfzDf7vS3S8QZk6iS4AlaSbcaxxseZUeORnIc9tbtXATc4SS5HSwK2KiXiy44lutH_sbXKXK4g9XgG-vdoj9vhTAEqkEoihthGlNw-PpY/s1732/Cineraria.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1732" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCbCjcnnPNJRhzH0pwYZ9cLTmzGzGlH5i7Gdkf0UGBNNm5K-mS-JWqN7ZgnLA2hUUxRvIlsDhvZrEDuOkTp-ZfzDf7vS3S8QZk6iS4AlaSbcaxxseZUeORnIc9tbtXATc4SS5HSwK2KiXiy44lutH_sbXKXK4g9XgG-vdoj9vhTAEqkEoihthGlNw-PpY/w640-h378/Cineraria.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br />Melbourne Australia Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00495515492384987803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7735358510756084330.post-24399339596849070252023-06-15T05:39:00.005-07:002023-06-15T05:39:42.779-07:00CYMBIDIUM<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><i>Cymbidium</i>, or boat orchids, is a genus of 52 evergreen species in the orchid family <i>Orchidaceae</i>. One of its first descriptions come from Olof Swartz in 1799. The name is derived from the Greek word <i>kumbos</i>, meaning 'hole, cavity'. It refers to the form of the base of the lip. The genus is abbreviated Cym in horticultural trade.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This genus is distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia (such as northern India, China, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Borneo) and northern Australia. The larger flowered species from which the large flowered hybrids are derived, grow at high altitudes. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Cymbidiums became popular in Europe during the Victorian era. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other garden plants with less refined foliage. This plant will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should not require much pruning, except when necessary, such as to remove dieback. It has no significant negative characteristics.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The plant grows to about 15 cm height and spreads over an area 50-60 cm in diameter. Its small serrated round leaves remain green in colour throughout the year. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This post is part of the <a href="http://floralfridayfoto.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Floral Friday Fotos meme</a><br /><br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO8Xv9IsDpcT4-pCXMMH1X16VGsv79WQxhvRmctStf7pwW1gn29OO1djQ-twRfY8yFih3w0GMrm8D7mLWf6ObB26DFse-xVfuB6fPHDtQ3QulRV73XuNeIgmjZcxMv2OlAM7G0fklmrUA69L2dodb-9IhT4isrtf3Hr1khWG1MGo0-EnhMkgyX_3-9/s1600/Bacopa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="946" data-original-width="1600" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO8Xv9IsDpcT4-pCXMMH1X16VGsv79WQxhvRmctStf7pwW1gn29OO1djQ-twRfY8yFih3w0GMrm8D7mLWf6ObB26DFse-xVfuB6fPHDtQ3QulRV73XuNeIgmjZcxMv2OlAM7G0fklmrUA69L2dodb-9IhT4isrtf3Hr1khWG1MGo0-EnhMkgyX_3-9/w640-h378/Bacopa.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Melbourne Australia Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00495515492384987803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7735358510756084330.post-71836597421208413602023-05-25T05:00:00.003-07:002023-05-25T05:00:09.088-07:00KANGAROO PAW<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Kangaroo paw is a common name for a number of species, in two genera of the family <i>Haemodoraceae</i>, that are endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. The most well-known species in this genus is<i> Telopea speciosissima</i>, which has bright red flowers and is the NSW state emblem.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The waratah is a member of the plant family <i>Proteaceae</i>, a family of flowering plants distributed in the Southern Hemisphere. The key diagnostic feature of <i>Proteaceae</i> is the inflorescence, which is often very large, brightly coloured and showy, consisting of many small flowers densely packed into a compact head or spike. Species of waratah boast such inflorescences ranging from 6–15 cm in diameter with a basal ring of coloured bracts.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">The leaves are spirally arranged, 10–20 cm long and 2–3 cm broad with entire or serrated margins. The name waratah comes from the Eora Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of the Sydney area.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">This post is part of the <a href="http://floralfridayfoto.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Floral Friday Fotos meme</a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQAgqij0guNRjkedAVppXCHs0YFiNKlFDb2bANxIwo1G88rD0oxotuV3F_JOchjNsH5b1VuEByNhcrrZ80imIJOp4Z1s_O_k6IfSRCB3xLveP_Urubc_-urvmn94xQQvi-aTdL0DFb_qEQAshiWdMyFZO4Fr-t1dEYVwcXZs9bVEACmIqnYqJ9OzPB/s1732/WaratahNJV.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1732" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQAgqij0guNRjkedAVppXCHs0YFiNKlFDb2bANxIwo1G88rD0oxotuV3F_JOchjNsH5b1VuEByNhcrrZ80imIJOp4Z1s_O_k6IfSRCB3xLveP_Urubc_-urvmn94xQQvi-aTdL0DFb_qEQAshiWdMyFZO4Fr-t1dEYVwcXZs9bVEACmIqnYqJ9OzPB/w640-h378/WaratahNJV.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>Melbourne Australia Photoshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00495515492384987803noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7735358510756084330.post-6078168130229258682023-04-05T05:27:00.003-07:002023-04-05T05:27:17.598-07:00ZINNIA AND BEE<span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Zinnias are currently in bloom in our Autumnal garden and the bees are feasting on them!
