FISH AND BIRD

Fish and Bird

A bird a fish espied,
In deep blue sea cavorting;
A fish a bird so pied
Saw high in air up sporting.
The two exchanged sweet glances,
And after leaps and dives
Decided such romances
Were on what a heart thrives.

The bird trilled in a burble:
“My love, you swim so well...”
The fish not quite so verbal,
Tossed him a pearly shell.
A fish a bird enamoured
A bird a fish loved back –
Now isn’t that thing contrary,
And yet they chose to marry!

The fish in air was choking,
In water the bird drowning.
And yet they met on sandy beach
And made a fine, short speech:
“If love is in your heart, dear,
All you shall overcome, no fear!
For love will all sharp edges smooth
And all great pains will soothe.”

  1. Your lovers remind me very much of Romeo and Juliet! How ironic when it is death that saves the day. But we don't know how it could have turned out if they could live in each other's atmosphere. Perhaps the part that most answers our prompt is the final stanza.

  5. I think I've known some bird/fish marriages in which the partners either suffocated or drowned! A rolicking, amusing yet thoughtful write!

  10. It is never going to work with the fish's sloppy kisses and bird's sharp pecks.

  15. I so love this! Wonderful poem, seemingly nonsense verse at first, but hides such a delightful meaning. Opposites attract and if there is little in common the marriage will fail - yet love conquers all and if it there, even a fish and a bird will be happy together :)
